Rainwater retention basin in Düsseldorf

Lightweight overfill

During the construction of new maintenance apertures and access routes at a Düsseldorf rainwater retention basin, the uncertain load-bearing capacity of the subsoil made it necessary to create a lightweight but nevertheless highly resistant substrate. The solution took the form of a 90-centimetre-thick layer of Liapor expanded clay fill from Liapor's Vintírov plant in the Czech Republic. Some 675 cubic metres of Liapor CS3G expanded clay fill of grain size 8 to 16 millimetres were used.
